bomb the bass is the alias from the english electronic music producer tim simenon. he released his debut album into the dragon in 1988. it s an intriguing trip through electro, acid-house and hip-hop music. on the album you ll find his breakthrough hit -beat dis-, which became popular in the underground and club circuit. it feels like you re listening to a radio broadcast show, including intro skits in a melting pot of styles. a true classic in the history of using samples in music. bomb the bass were one of the first acts to bring sample-based music and scratching to a mainstream audience.

official mr bongo reissue. replica original cover artwork. recorded in 1978, this is a latter-period gem from the larger than life legend, combining the glitz and glamour of disco’s heyday with maia’s raw funk and soul roots. for “disco club”, maia left his usual band and went into the legendary estudios level with an ensemble of rio’s finest including paulinha braga on drums, jamil joanes on bass, robson jorge on clarinet, hyldon de souza on guitar, sidinho on percussion, trombonists edmundo maciel and darcy seixas, and juarez assis on tenor sax. arranger and keyboardist lincoln olivetti was a crucial presence during these sessions – he added the all-important string flourish and brassy joy to the uptempo tracks, leaving maia enough room to express himself.

the new slow life release is a hidden gem from the 90s signed by the australian deep/ambient master, tim jackiw. after more than a decade, and thanks to an adventitious encounter with some of the tracks via youtube rip of a promo cassette given on party back in the day, these beauties are finally pressed on wax.

weve been huge fans of tims work since the release of his first self-titled ep on astrolab. his analogue sound has been described as both death mulch and rare gloom. for his second work for love twelve, he continues the journey into dark spaces with four more deep synth freakers from his fish island school of synthesis studio. after releases on esteemed labels including emotional response, world unknown, bird scarer, hoga nord, rotters golf club (as the asphodells with andrew weatherall) and his own label crimes of the future which he runs with scott fraser, his debut album where is the champion? was released earlier in the year to critical acclaim. tim will continue to push forward and we feel privileged to see him return for a wfl round two.

luiz mendes jr or junior mendes was a ubiquitous figure in the brazilian soul / funk scene of the 70s and early 80s, contributing to compositions for bands such as banda black rio, tim maia, sandra de sa and many more. this, his only solo album has remained off the map (unless you re a collector of rare brazilian vinyl). despite his huge contribution to brazilian music the lp has remained unissued until now, 35 years after its recording.

around was the first song from same language different worlds that everybody heard. tim burgess had sent a home made cd-r to lauren laverne as soon as the record was completed and she texted asking if a song could be featured on the 6music show that morning. peter gordon and tim had spent the precious few months crafting the album in new york, norfolk & manchester - tim sent the song to pete kember and proclaimed the resultant remix as “one of the best tracks i ve ever had the pleasure of being involved with”.
